Malta, and the area
surrounding this village, may be among the better kept secrets in Ohio. Although small in
population, this area features a number of exciting attractions that provide wonderful
opportunities for individuals and families to enjoy the great outdoors.
Malta is located in the heart of the Muskingum River Valley. Malta has the rare distinction of being the location where the last paddlewheeler on the Muskingum River was built. Known as the Elizabeth Anne, this vessel serves as a unique Bed and Breakfast built and operated by Dr. Ron Downing. Guests on the Elizabeth Anne can enjoy overnight lodging, a cruise up the scenic Muskingum, and tales of the river valley as told by Captain Ron.
Malta is only about 15 miles away from one of the premier state parks in Ohio. As one of Ohio's resort parks, Burr Oak State Park offers a wide array of overnight accommodations with its lodge, cabins and campground. Burr Oak Lodge, overlooking the lake from the east, offers sixty guest rooms, five meeting rooms, a dining room, full-service lounge and a gift shop as well. In addition, the park features thirty family cabins designed to sleep six individuals comfortably with kitchen and shower facilities. Facilities for lodge and cabin guests include a swimming beach, tennis courts, playground equipment, boat launch ramp and an indoor swimming pool.
Just a short drive from Malta and Morgan County, individuals can experience the largest wildlife conservation facility in North America. This facility is a place where African, Asian, and North American wildlife can roam freely. This is a place known rather appropriately as, The Wilds. Consisting of 6,000 acres of rolling grasslands, 3,000 acres of dense woods and 700 acres of wetlands just outside of Cumberland, Ohio, The Wilds exists in order to promote conservation through education and research programs to protect and manage wildlife resources. From May to October, visitors can take a bus on a guided tour through part of the facility.
